Alice is the office manager for Freely Petroleum Products. During her 6 years of employment she has had to acquire a great many computer skills in order to keep up with current best practices. Her employers are not particularly computer savvy so they depend on Alice to develop the necessary skills with office management and accounting software. They also depend on her to keep the equipment running properly and, in general, be the in-house IT person.
Problem:
The office computers seem to be slowing down lately, and Alice is having problems connecting with the Internet and with other computers in her network. Also, the accountant has notified the company that they have to upgrade their accounting software and Alice doesn't know if her systems meet the requirements for the upgrade.
Solution:
A check of Alice's network infrastructure indicated that her cabling and routing equipment was old and outdated and needed to be replaced. This would allow for an upgrade to a broadband internet connection. The operating systems on the office computers also needed an upgrade, but the hardware still has a year or two of good use left. Hardware and software upgrades will not only improve performance, but allow for increased security, centralized data storage, and more efficient and dependable backups.
