Should I Fix It, Upgrade it, or Replace It?
Tough Call! But here are a few suggestions:
- Generally speaking, a computer which is three years old or older can only benefit from a memory(RAM) upgrade. This can usually be done for about $125. Spending any more on a system with this many miles is usually not recommended. When repairs or upgrades can amount to $300 or more it's time to get a new one.
- There are some situations where a low end computer ($300-$600) can be the ideal solution. But most people should expect to spend between $900 and $1200 on a new PC, especially if you include a flat panel monitor. Be sure to look at some flat panels before you buy. For a laptop, you should be thinking $1100 - $1400. And that doesn't include productivity software like Microsoft Office or WordPerfect.
- Get the biggest screen you can. You won't be sorry.
- Big hard drives are OK, but spend your money on memory(RAM).
